Society of Operations with Integers

In our lesson on the order of operations, we learned the correct priority or order for each functioning, when faced with multiple operations in a problem. Let's review the order of operations:

  1. Work inside of whatsoever parentheses or grouping symbols
  2. Perform all exponent operations
  3. Multiply or separate (working left to right)
  4. Add or decrease (working left to right)

Recall that we can too utilize the acronym PEMDAS to remember our steps. We must exist very careful with this acronym; multiplication and division have the aforementioned priority level. These operations are evaluated working left to right. The same is true with improver and subtraction. They also accept the aforementioned priority level and are evaluated working from left to right.

PEMDAS

  • P - Parentheses or grouping symbols
  • E - Exponents
  • Yard/D - Multiply/Dissever (working left to right)
  • A/S - Addition/Subtraction (working left to correct)

In this lesson, nosotros will look at some typical problems that involve the use of integers. These problems tin be slightly more than difficult, due to the various sign rules that come into play. Let's have a look at a few examples.
Example one: Evaluate each:
(-nine - (-iii) 10 7) ÷ |-three2 + 5|

  • First, nosotros look for parentheses or grouping symbols, once inside we will reapply the order of operations.
  • In this problem, we have parentheses and absolute value bars. These are both grouping symbols. Nosotros will start by working inside of each.
  • (-9 - (-3) ten 7) ÷ |-iii2 + v|
  • Inside of our parentheses, nosotros have subtraction and multiplication. Multiplication has a college priority. Nosotros will perform (-3) x 7 first.
  • (-iii) ten 7 = -21, let's supercede this in our problem.
  • (-9 - (-21)) ÷ |-three2 + five|
  • Continuing within of the parentheses, we only have subtraction. Nosotros will perform -9 - (-21) adjacent.
  • -9 - (-21) = 12, let'south replace this in our problem.
  • 12 ÷ |-3two + 5|
  • Next, we look at our other grouping symbol, the accented value operation.
  • 12 ÷ |-3ii + 5|
  • Inside of the absolute value bars, we have an exponent performance and addition. The exponent operation has the highest priority. Nosotros will perform -iii2 first.
  • -three2 = -nine, let'south supervene upon this in our problem.
  • 12 ÷ |-9 + 5|
  • Standing inside of the absolute value bars, we but take addition. Nosotros volition perform -9 + five next.
  • -nine + five = -4, let's supercede this in our problem.
  • 12 ÷ |-4|
  • Let's now have the absolute value of -4, this will requite u.s. +4. Let'southward replace this in our trouble.
  • 12 ÷ iv
  • Last, we have one single partition operation left, let's divide 12 by 4 and get our final reply of 3.
  • 12 ÷ iv = 3

(-9 - (-3) ten 7) ÷ |-three2 + 5| = 3
Instance 2: Evaluate each:
[(ii5 - two4 ÷ 2two) ÷ |-five 10 three + eight|] ÷ |-52 + 7 x 5 - half dozen|

  • Start, nosotros expect for parentheses or grouping symbols, in one case inside we will reapply the order of operations.
  • In this problem, we have brackets "[]", parentheses, and absolute value bars. These are all grouping symbols. We will outset by working within of each.
  • Let'south start by working inside the brackets. In one case inside we volition reapply our order of operations.
  • [(25 - 24 ÷ 22) ÷ |-5 x 3 + 8|] ÷ |-52 + seven x 5 - vi|
  • Inside of the brackets, we have parentheses and absolute value bars. We will showtime with the parentheses.
  • Inside of parentheses, we take 25 - 24 ÷ 22. Here exponents are a higher priority than subtraction or segmentation. Permit'due south start past performing all exponent operations.
  • 25 = 32, 24 = xvi, 22 = 4, let's supersede these in our trouble.
  • [(32 - 16 ÷ 4) ÷ |-5 x iii + 8|] ÷ |-52 + 7 10 five - 6|
  • Now we have subtraction and division, nosotros volition divide before nosotros subtract. We will perform xvi ÷ iv side by side.
  • 16 ÷ 4 = 4, let's supplant this in our trouble.
  • [(32 - 4) ÷ |-5 10 3 + viii|] ÷ |-52 + 7 ten v - 6|
  • Now we accept simply subtraction. We volition perform 32 - four adjacent.
  • 32 - 4 = 28, let's supplant this in our trouble.
  • [28 ÷ |-5 x 3 + eight|] ÷ |-vii + vii x 5 - vi|
  • Standing inside of our brackets, nosotros take an absolute value operation. Inside, nosotros accept multiplication and addition. We volition multiply before we add together. We will perform -v x 3 next.
  • -five x 3 = -fifteen, let'south replace this in our problem.
  • [28 ÷ |-15 + 8|] ÷ |-52 + vii x 5 - half-dozen|
  • Now we have only addition inside of the accented value bars, we volition perform -15 + 8 next.
  • -xv + eight = -seven, let'due south supersede this in our problem.
  • [28 ÷ |-vii|] ÷ |-52 + 7 10 5 - 6|
  • Now we can take the accented value of -7, which is 7. Let's replace this in our trouble.
  • [28 ÷ 7] ÷ |-52 + 7 x 5 - half dozen|
  • Lastly, we will dissever 28 past 7.
  • 28 ÷ vii = 4, allow'due south replace this in our problem.
  • 4 ÷ |-52 + 7 x 5 - 6|
  • Now we will simplify inside of the accented value operation on the right.
  • 4 ÷ |-52 + 7 10 5 - 6|
  • Inside of the absolute value operation, we take an exponent performance, multiplication, improver, and subtraction. We will begin with our exponent operation -52.
  • -five2 = -25, let'due south replace this in our problem.
  • 4 ÷ |-25 + 7 ten 5 - six|
  • Continuing inside of the absolute value bars, we take improver, multiplication, and subtraction. We will multiply 7 x 5 next.
  • seven x 5 = 35, let'southward supercede this in our problem.
  • 4 ÷ |-25 + 35 - 6|
  • Standing inside of the absolute value bars, nosotros accept addition and subtraction. We perform add-on and subtraction working left to right. Since the addition performance is the leftmost, nosotros will perform -25 + 35 adjacent.
  • -25 + 35 = 10, let's supersede this in our problem.
  • 4 ÷ |10 - 6|
  • Now we only have subtraction left inside of the absolute value confined. Nosotros will perform ten - 6 as our next functioning.
  • 10 - 6 = 4
  • 4 ÷ |iv|
  • Now we will take the accented value of iv, which is 4. Let's supersede this in our problem.
  • 4 ÷ iv
  • Our last functioning will exist the division of 4 by four, which will give us our final respond of 1.
  • 4 ÷ iv = 1

[(25 - iiiv ÷ iiii) ÷ |-5 x 3 + 8|] ÷ |-52 + 7 x 5 - 6| = 1

Skills Check:
